Shamrocks vs St. Finbarrs Ladies League Round 3

20 May 2014 by laura shaughnessy

It was a tough weekend for Western Shamrocks in the 2014 League and the Ladies were no exception as they took on the reigning 2013 and pre-season champions and arch rivals, St. Finbarrs. They ladies fought hard and matched the Barr’s in terms of fitness and stamina, but a ten minute period of dominance for the Barr’s at the end of the first half which saw them clock up 2 goals, would prove too difficult for the Shams to recuperate from in the second half.

St. Finbarrs were the first to settle in to the game as they notched up 2 points on the board. It wasn’t long before the Shammies answered back with a free from Sharon Cassidy to let the opposition know it would be no easy fight. However, some tough luck and crucial misses for Shamrocks saw the Barr’s score 2 more points unanswered leaving the score at 0-4 to 0-1, 15 minutes in.

The last 10 minutes of the first half were disastrous for the Shammies as mistakes around midfield resulted in punishment from Finbarr’s and 2 goals to their name.

Half time score: 2-4 to 0-1

The Shamrocks entered the second half with heads still high and were determined to make ground on Finbarrs. Shamrocks were the first to open the 2nd half scoreline with a well-earned point from wing back Maria Enright but Finbarr’s answered shortly after. Another point from Finbarr’s was then answered by a cracking goal from Sharon Cassidy making the score 2-6 to 1-2.

Cathy Mee was the next to exchange points with Finbarrs as she attacked the defence with a well worked point from wing back. An exceptional goal from Sarah ‘Falu’ Daly gave the Shamrocks the lift they needed as the closed in on Finbarrs 2-8 to 2-4.

However the gap proved to be too much to recover from and the Barr’s closed the second half with 3 points in a row leaving the final score 2-11 to 2-4.

Both teams were congratulated by the referee at the end for producing such a high quality clean game of football. In terms of progress from 2013, the Shamrocks are positive that they can make ground over the coming weeks with hard training under the capable management of Shelley Matcham and experienced coaching of Mark Campbell. The Shams have a lot to look forward to throughout the season and will not go unnoticed.
